About Empeon

Empeon is the modern HCM platform built for healthcare. We power payroll, scheduling, HR, benefits, and compliance for skilled nursing facilities, home care agencies, and other healthcare employers across the country.

Reporting and analytics is a major area of investment for us, and we are hiring the engineer who will help architect and build the foundation for it.

The Role

You will own Empeon’s next-generation reporting and analytics platform end to end — architecting the foundation, writing the code that matters most, and helping build the team that delivers the full module to customers.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will set technical direction, make foundational architecture decisions, ship critical code yourself, and help grow the team over time.

This is a high-impact role with ownership over architecture, execution, and product outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Architect the data and query layer behind a self-serve report builder where customers can pull from across the platform, write formulas, combine fields, and pivot results.
  • Design and build the AI capabilities that sit on top of the platform — natural language reporting ("show me employees with overtime last month"), smart anomaly detection, suggested insights, and AI-assisted report authoring. This is core to the product.
  • Design the semantic layer that turns our underlying data model into clean, business-friendly fields and metrics.
  • Build the expression and formula engine — parsing, evaluation, type safety, and a great developer experience for the team extending it.
  • Own performance and scale. Decide how analytics workloads are isolated from transactional ones — read replicas, a warehouse layer, materialized aggregates, or a combination.
  • Design the multi-tenant security model so customers see exactly the data they're entitled to and nothing more.
  • Make build-vs-buy calls on engine components, document them clearly, and ship.
  • Build and lead the reporting and analytics engineering team — hiring, mentoring, setting standards, and growing the org as the module expands.

What we’re looking for

  • 8+ years of backend engineering experience, with meaningful time on a BI, analytics, data platform, or reporting infrastructure team.
  • Deep experience designing query engines, semantic layers, or BI platforms — whether homegrown or on top of tools like Cube, Looker, dbt, or Metabase.
  • Experience building or meaningfully contributing to an expression or formula engine in production, including parsing, evaluation, or safe execution.
  • Strong SQL performance background — execution plans, indexing, partitioning, and materialization strategies. You can look at a slow query and come up with multiple credible ways to fix it.
  • Experience building multi-tenant systems where row-level security matters.
  • Comfortable working in .NET / C# and SQL Server. Experience with EF Core, Dapper, and Angular is a plus but not required.

AI-first — both how you build and what you build

This role is AI-first in two ways, and we mean both:

AI in the product. We are building an AI-native reporting and analytics experience — natural language queries, AI-assisted report authoring, anomaly detection, intelligent payroll audits, and conversational follow-ups on dashboards. These capabilities are being architected into the platform from day one as core product. Production experience with LLMs, RAG, structured output, function calling, or text-to-SQL is a major plus.

AI in how you work. You use modern AI tools such as Claude, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalent as part of your regular workflow — reverse-engineering schemas, large refactors, query analysis, test generation, and exploring tradeoffs. You can point to concrete examples where AI has made you materially faster without sacrificing quality.
